Crest and Motto
The Birmingham University production of the anonymous Greek play, Hymenaeus, translated "Gratia gratiam parit, quod grato fit non perit" as "Favor begets favor, what befalls a grateful man never perishes."
The phrase Gratia gratiam parit is also found in Erasmus, Adages (Adagia I.i.34). In view of the awkward translations, it may be more eloquent in the Latin - untranslated. The sense of the motto concerns, of course, the fecundity of generosity, the belief that 'generosity is never unrewarded'.
