Part of the film came from Benigni's own family history; Roberto's father had survived three years of internment at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. 1st Feb (Fri) St Cuthbert's Film Night Ward off the winter blues by escaping into the intoxicating mix of fin-de-siècle Parisian musical theatre, romance and joie de vivre in Baz Luhrmann's 'Moulin Rouge' (2001). With "Strictly Ballroom" and "William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet", Australian director Baz Luhrmann conquered the world with his brash, inventive exuberance.Moulin Rouge tells the story of Christian (Ewan McGregor), a youngwriter in Paris who begins a doomed romance with the city’s most famous courtesan, Satine (Nicole Kidman). Satine is the star of the eponymous nightspot, whose future depends on her marrying a wealthy patron (Richard Roxburgh). In a plot twist borrowed from "La Bohème" (which Luhrmann filmed for Australian television in 1993), she is also suffering from tuberculosis.
The film caused a stir at Cannes with its use of contemporary pop tunes (Elton John’s Your Song, Nirvana’s Smells Like Teen Spirit) that add an anachronistic spin to the period setting. Add flashy editing, lush production design and spectacular dance routines and the result is something akin to an extended music video - a resemblance reinforced by Kylie Minogue’s fleeting appearance as the Absinthe Fairy. McGregor reveals a fine tenor voice as the lovestruck lead, but it’s Kidman who steals the movie with a devastating display of sultry allure.
Time:- Film will be screened between 6.00pm and 7.30pm.Followed by light refreshments and an opportunity for informal discussion about the film.
Venue:- House no 11 (North Bailey) TV room.
This event is open to JCR aswell as SCR members. Cost £2. Please book your place at St Cuthbert's reception by Wednesday 30th January 2013.

Following on from the success of our Open Garden Day in July 2012, when we raised £600 for St Cuthbert's Hospice, we have planned a further Open day for Sunday 30th June. We meet in the garden at 10.00am and finish in time for Sunday Lunch in the dining hall which is free of charge for all those who take part. 11th June (Tues) 125 Voices 'The Big Sing'
As part of the exciting year of events planned for the 125th anniversary of St Cuthbert’s Society, the SCR are working with the JCR to organise a ‘Big Sing’ to be held during Art’s Week on the 11th June. The aim is to gather together 125 people from the St Cuthbert’s Society community, including members of the JCR and SCR, alumni and College staff, to sing in unison in the College Gardens. Two pieces of music have been chosen: Lux Aeterna by David Schmidt and Robbie William’s ‘Angels’. Tom Wakelam, JCR President, and Millie Tanner, from St Cuthbert’s Choir, have kindly offered to prepare a CD of the two pieces of music (each sung in three parts) to send out in advance to those who sign up to participate, in addition to the sheet music and lyrics. The plan is to meet for rehearsals on the day of the performance. The morning rehearsal (9.30am for a 10.00am start) will involve three separate rehearsal groups for those singing the three parts (male, female soprano, female alto). This will be followed by lunch and a second rehearsal from 2.00pm to 4.00pm of the whole choir singing in three parts. The performance will take place at 5.00pm, hopefully in the gardens, weather permitting, but otherwise in the dining hall.
All are very much welcome (and encouraged) to take part and no previous singing experience is needed. Just bring your enthusiasm and be prepared to have some fun celebrating St Cuthbert’s! There may be a small charge to cover the cost of a t-shirt for all participating singers and lunch/refreshments on the day.
Below is a youtube link to a production of Lux Aeterna for an idea of what we will be singing.
