Cuth's 125th Anniversary Year
Cuth's 125th anniversary year began, very appropriately, with a series of events on St Cuthbert's Day, March 20th. A reception held in the dining hall was attended by a broad cross-section of the community: students and JCR officers (who had been doing sterling service as Open Day Reps), college officers, kitchen and catering staff, porters, SCR members (some of whom had just completed the final leg of the Cuthbert's Way pilgrimage from Chester-le-Street to the Cathedral, and had the mud stains to prove it), two ex-Principals (John Norton and Graham Towl), and guests including the University Treasurer and the Dean of the Cathedral.
For the first time the Society was included in the Cathedral's annual Festal Evensong for St Cuthbert's Day. A number of SCR members attended this service and were proud to hear Cuth's 125th anniversary mentioned in the Dean's opening remarks. The Principal and the JCR President offered readings from Bede's Life of St Cuthbert, and laid a wreath (predominantly green and white) on Cuthbert's tomb. The Cathedral were delighted by our participation in the service, and are keen to establish this as an ongoing tradition, as are the Principal and the JCR. We encourage all members of Cuth's who are in the area to come to next year's service.
