SCR Events
A number of events are arranged through the SCR each term ranging from college formals to walks and gardening events. There is a guest night that takes place at the end of each term.
What are Guest Nights ?
Guest Nights are held at the end of each term. They provide an opportunity for members and College Officers to invite colleagues, family and friends to enjoy a relaxing evening in lovely surroundings. All members are welcome to attend and we encourage them to invite friends and colleagues so that they find out more about the SCR, what it can offer them and to explore how the it might benefit from their membership. Key staff from the Society, the JCR, Academic Departments and Central functions within the University are often invited because of some specific work that they have undertaken on behalf of the Society or it’s students.
The evenings begin with reception drinks and a welcome from the SCR President. In the summer this is held in the gardens of 12 South Bailey, which are maintained by a group of SCR volunteers under the careful supervision of our resident horticultural expert, Jackie Walton.
The chef, Marc Reavley and his team always prepare a lovely 3 course meal with cheese and biscuits whilst Dawn Purdy and her team decorate the tables and room and help make the whole atmosphere very welcoming. Guest nights often follow a theme, for instance Christmas, St Patrick’s Day and in the case of summer 2012, the The Royal Jubilee and the Olympics set the scene for a Summer of Celebrations Guest Night, as can be seen from the accompanying photographs of recent Guest Nights.
The evenings conclude with some form of entertainment, usually one of the student music or choral groups, such as Cuth’s Big Band who played at the end of the Summer Guest Night. See photos.
The dates of each Guest Night are published on the Annual Events Programme which sent out to all members and can be accessed through the Events section of the Website. The dates for 2012-13 are: Saturday 15th December, Saturday 16th March and Saturday 22nd June. The timings are normally 7:00 for 7:30 and the dress code is Black Tie except for summer which is Lounge Suits.
