Job Requirements and Details Junior Library Staff
Junior Library Staff are responsible to the Society Librarian and to Senior Staff.
Library Staff Structure: Library Comm. (Society President) Senior Staff Society Librarian Assistant Librarian Stock Manager Treasurer Senior Library Staff Junior Library StaffJunior Staff must:
1. Fill in the signing-in sheet at the beginning and end of every shift. You will not be paid for any hours that are not recorded, and may be marked absent.
2. Turn on both computers (main desk and study room) load millenium and a browser window open to http://library.dur.ac.uk in both
3. Be thoroughly acquainted with the Junior Folder, and take time to ensure that any email updates or new procedures are read through carefully.
4. Loan all books on the Millenium system as detailed in the Junior Folder, and stamp the return date as appears on the screen. Under no circumstances is a book to be loaned without being registered on Millenium.
5. Shelve all returned books into their appropriate sections.
6. Organise and tidy the books on your designated shelves at the beginning of every shift.
7. Remove damaged books from the shelves and put them into the designated repairs section behind the Library desk for the attention of the Stock Manager.
8. Help borrowers find the resources they need online and on the shelves. Register recalls and book holds as necessary, and as detailed in the Junior Folder
9. Enter book requests into the Requests Book on the desk.
10. Record all sales from the shop and take money accurately.
11. Assist in the annual stock take.
12. Ensure that the Library is tidy, and that a quiet working environment is maintained throughout the day.
13. Answer all borrower questions as fully as possible. However, the following services are only available when a Senior Staff member is on duty in the last shift of every day:
DVD and Video loans (All returns to be posted into the drop-box) Change of campus card barcode
Expensive sales from the Library Shop (eg. USB pens)
14. Be available for any other duties as deemed necessary by the Librarian and Senior Staff.
Full training will be given before your first shift by a member of Library Committee. Changes in procedure which require additional training will be arranged if/when appropriate.
Wages are paid at the National Minimum Wage and are paid at the end of each term.
If you cannot make a shift, you must give the Assistant Librarian 24 hours notice, who will find a trained replacement. Failure to do so will constitute a missed shift, which will be dealt with according to the Grievances and Disciplinary Measures.
Any member of staff wishing to give up the post before the end of the year must do so in writing to the Society Librarian.
