Cuth’s is well known in Durham for having the best college bar and we are also the only collegiate body to have two bars. It’s always lively, especially in the evenings, and is possibly the cheapest place you will ever get a drink.
Cuths’ Bar on the Bailey and Brooks Bar at Parsons’ Field both offer a wide selection of snacks and beverages as well as the famous Cuth’s atmosphere.
We are very proud of our friendly and especially student-orientated atmosphere, where participation in all aspects of Society life is encouraged.
We are the only student body to operate two bars on two different sites in Durham; Cuth’s Bar is the only college bar open every afternoon, as well as being open frequently in the holidays and Brooks Bar also has later opening hours than the other college bars. Check the opening hours page for the latest info.
The bar is staffed and operated by Cuth’s students. Again, this helps us to understand what students are likely to want and adds to the enjoyable atmosphere you just don’t get from non student-run establishments. More importantly it means that we listen to you – what you want from your bar and what you don’t.
The bar will also provide a cocktail bar and bottle bar for Ents, and possibly if you ask them nicely, for other events too.
Cuth’s only exists because of students and there are numerous ways to get involved. Working behind the bar is just one of the ways to do this, where you can meet people and also earn some ever useful money. Our Staff and Spirits Manager is the person to talk to if you’re interested in working in the bar. She can be contacted by email at h.l.alvis@dur.ac.uk.
Bar Organisation
Our bars are collectively Saint Cuthbert’s Society Club Bar which is a private members club consisting of all members of the JCR, the SCR and Society staff in Saint Cuthbert’s Society, students and staff from other colleges are also welcome as associate members of the club. The Club is run according to the Club Constitution.
All profits from the Club are either reinvested in the Club or transfered to the JCR in order to fund JCR facilities or our sports teams and societies.
