I’m Alan, and I’m your MILP Committee Chairman for this academic year. MILP stands for “mature, international, local and part-time”, although we tend to say “MILP” simply because it’s not such a mouthful!
Cuth’s has always been rooted in diversity. In it’s founding years, our Society was home to students who went ‘against the grain’ and decided not to live in university accommodation. Today, we are just as diverse, and welcome people from a massive range of backgrounds, from local students who wish to stay in the family home whilst studying, mature (over 21 when starting an undergraduate degree) students who have come to join the ranks of the penniless Durhamite, to international students from all over the globe.
Of course, with such a variety of personalities, experiences and outlooks, comes a need for a representational body who are able to cater for the broad range of needs these groups have. This is where MILP Committee come in. In essence, the Committee is comprised of a number of representatives (see below), each of whom have experience with a different demographic. Our international student’s representative, for example, is an international student themselves, our mature student’s representative is a mature student; you get the picture.
By having a committee such as this, the views, needs and ideas of our diverse student body can be represented fairly, accurately and empathically. We know what our students want, because we have all been in your shoes before.
It’s my job to chair this committee; coordinating their activity, organising regular meetings and surgery hours, and working alongside our social committee to arrange events.
I myself am a local student, I spent my first two years living in Sunderland (about ten miles from Durham), so have a good idea of some of the questions and concerns you may have. I also spent last year living in Brooks House, so have seen student life from both sides of the fence.
Please do get in touch. Cuth’s is a very friendly place, and not only will I be glad to help you, but look forward to making friends with you all too. I’m living in Brooks House again this year (Pavillion I, 3rd Floor), so come and give me a knock! My contact details are below if you need to get in touch.
Enjoy your time here, I look forward to meeting you.
