Student Planning & Assessment

Student and Staff Statistics

The University Student and Staff Statistics Book is produced each academic year. The Book is split into the following main sections:

General Notes

Census Date for Data

Statistics shown for students and staff are as at 1st December of each year (the 'Census Date' of the Funding Council).

Use of Data

Student numbers and load data for each academic year feeds into the annual planning process and forms the basis for projected numbers and load.

Student Numbers

A department's student numbers are the number of students registered for degrees based in that department. Students on joint honours courses split between two departments count as 0.5 to each department.

Student Load

Student load reflects where students spend their taught time. The total student load for each full-time student will normally be 1.0.

Student load is derived from the module details held on the student records system.

More detailed notes on student load are included in the Student Load section of Undergrduate Statistics.

Staff Numbers

Staff numbers are derived from the database held by Human Resources.

More detailed notes on staff numbers are included in the Staff Statistics section.

College / Campus Numbers

Discrepancies between undergraduate student tables (by campus) and college student tables (by college) are students whose programmes of study are based on one campus (eg. Durham), but whose college affiliation is based at another campus (eg. George Stephenson).
