Sports - Rugby...

JSRFC finished comfortably mid table in their first season in the premiership. With an exciting recruit of new freshers the season of 2011/12 finished on a high: a final victory against our rivals Stephenson College. We grew as a team throughout the year, improving match after match, and we hope to take our good form into the year ahead.

The College A teams are put through to the annual ‘Floodlit Cup’ which is an inter-college knockout tournament. It is a huge spectacle for Durham College sport every year as it brings out the best of college support. Last year we were unfortunately knocked out in the 2nd round of the Cup. Another big event of the college sport calendar is the Hill vs. Bailey Charity match. College captains put through their best performing players to represent either the Hill team or the Bailey, depending on which college you are in.  It’s an exciting match held at Durham RFC attracting crowds into the hundreds. Last year JSRFC went on tour to Lloret, Spain at the beginning of the Easter holidays where the planned matches weren’t played (due to teams pulling out) but instead the time was better spent on extended socialising and exploring the strip of Lloret. The social aspect of JSRFC could simply be put as the best of the best and it is something to look forward to week in week out, with our regular themed nights and trips to the likes of Middlesbrough and perhaps even Durham. We encourage and welcome players of any ability to join our squad. We had a few boys last year who knew nothing about rugby when they joined but a few months later they were playing for us. It’s about taking part after all!

Inter college rugby at Durham has a very high standard and that’s probably why it is so popular. If you are interested find us at the Queen’s Campus Fresher’s fair during Fresher’s Week!
