Freshers - Frequently Asked Questions...

Everyone has questions about coming to University and even some that are specific to John Snow College, so we hope the following information might answer a few of your questions and if not then please contact us and we'll be more than happy to help.

How many people will I be living with?

John Snow College Halls are split into blocks, each block has 3 floors and each floor has 2 flats. Each flat holds 6 people who share one kitchen. Every bedroom has it's own ensuite bathroom. We can't tell you who you'll be living with but you might be able to track them down on our Facebook group if you share the room number and block that you'll get through the post.

Will I know what to do when I arrive?

When you arrive at the College all of our Reps & JCR Committee will be there in blue polo shirts, we'll direct you to where you can collect your keys and we'll unload your car for you upto your room. It's such a hectic day...they'll be music and a great atmosphere (apparently it's one of the best welcomes in the whole of Durham University!).

Do I need to bring any kitchen equipment?

Each kitchen is equipped with 2 cookers, a fridge, freezer, toaster, kettle and microwave so there is no need to bring those! You'll have to bring your own cutlery and plates, cups etc and a few pans but there are plenty of shops around Stockton that you can get these from for a small amount.

What food do I need to bring?

We'd probably reccomend bringing along a few essentials such as pasta, milk, bread etc for your first night but we've a Sainsbury's located 30 seconds from the building which will be able to provide any food you'll need once you arrive. There's a College Tutor & Parent Welcome Meal on the Sunday too...

Is there space for me to bring a car?

We do have car parking space at the college, however there is a charge for this and permits are handled by the college. You will find information regarding this in your welcome pack when you arrive.

Can I bring a bike? Or hire one?

We'd encourage you to bring a bike and we've a secure facility both at college and on campus for bikes to be stored. The University also works with a local company to hire bikes per term and information on this will be sent out once you arrive.

Is there internet at Halls and do I need to do anything to my computer/laptop/mac?

Every room has an internet socket linked to the University network. You'll need to ensure that your computer meets the security settings laid out by the IT Service here and this can be done on the CIS Website. There is also Wireless internet access around campus and in our social space in Meynell Block.

Do I have to go out in fancy dress every night?

We love fancy dress at John Snow College, but not everyone does! Don't feel that you can't come on a night out if you've not got the right costume - we'd much rather see you out and enjoying yourself in your own clothes than in your room when we're all out having an amazing time!
