Biography

James has extensive experience of teaching mathematics and statistics. He was head of mathematics at Belfast Royal Academy for 13 years, has held a number of examining positions with different boards, and acted as a consultant for QCA on a number of occasions. He holds a mathematics degree from Cambridge and an MSc in Applied Statistics and Statistics Education from Sheffield Hallam. He is the author of two A-level Statistics texts, and two revision guides for GCSE Mathematics, co-editor of The Concise Oxford Dictionary of Mathematics and has contributed to a number of other secondary level mathematics and statistics texts, as well as writing journal articles and making conference presentations on teaching statistics and on the use of ICT in teaching mathematics and statistics. He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (RSS), a Fellow of the Institute Of Mathematics and its Applications (IMA), where he served on Council for 6 years and chaired the Schools and FE group for 6 years, and a Vice-President of the International Association of Statistical Education (IASE).
