The Palestinian Quest for Statehood

(28 September 2011)

Dr. Anoush Ehteshami, Professor of International relations at Durham University in the United Kingdom, speaks to the recent Palestinian bid for statehood at the United Nations Security Council. He discusses obstacles to the bid, such as the projected US veto, as well as domestic pressures facing President Mahmoud Abbas in Gaza and the Palestinian Territories. He also talks about what drove the bid, the benefits and the risks, wider support for the Palestinians, the increasing isolation of Israel, the likely outcome (non-state observer status in the General Assembly) and the importance of sympathetic countries like Malaysia.
