Employing a Student
Students possess a wide range of general and specialist skills and experience. Organisations benefit from the determination, enthusiasm, flexibility and reliability that students can bring, whether they are working with you as an integral part of their course or working in your organisation as an extra curricular activity.
Today's university students:
- Can focus on business issues and solutions
- Resolve problems effectively
- Are skilled in IT
- Are teamworkers
- Can think for themselves
- Can get on with it
- A work experience student also offers you the opportunity to train a potential new recruit for your business.
Information for employers on employing international students
Since June 1999 students no longer need a work permit to work in the UK. Employing International Students is legal, although there are restrictions to the hours and type of work they may undertake. To make the most of the benefits that non-UK nationals can bring, employers need to understand how to comply with relevant legislation as well as understanding how to recruit and retain migrant workers. The Student Employment Service can help you to recruit international students as part–time workers. Free advice, help and support is available to employers from a variety of sources such as ACAS, the Home Office and Business Link.
