SUMMARY:Well-being and Place: an International Conference
DESCRIPTION:An International Conference for Researchers.Policy attention h
as manifest a distinct shift in its targets over the last ten years awa
y from the purely material and economic to embrace more subjective dime
nsions of human flourishing. Amongst a range of terms that have entered
policy debates, well-being has perhaps gained the greatest currency, inco
rporating both physical and cognitive elements and applied across indiv
idual and collective scales of analysis. That the definition, experienc
e and determinants of well-being will vary in different kinds of place
is self-evident; nonetheless, the complex ways in which place and well-
being interact remain relatively under-researched and under-theorised.
This conference then aims to draw together research that explicitly links
well-being and place to advance knowledge and stimulate future directio
ns that are both creative intellectually and timely for contemporary po
licy debates. We hope to attract research from a range of different sca
les of analysis, across different substantive domains and from both pol
icy-linked and more explorative approaches. The concept of place is int
erpreted broadly from geographical locations (urban, rural, city, natio
n), everyday settings (home, work, school, street, leisure centres) and
different scales (individual to international). We welcome contributions
from the academic and policy related communities on issues that link pl
ace and well-being. Potential themed sessions include, but are not limi
ted to: Home and well-being Theory, methods and ethics of well-bein
g Transitions: well-being across this life course and the next The
rapeutic places and unhealthy spaces Busy with a purpose; the importan
ce of doing nothing Well-being in motion: flows, networks, relations
The conference will be held at the internationally renowned Durham Univ
ersity. Sessions will take place at the Durham Campus and the Wolfson
Research Institute located at Queen’s Campus, Stockton; combin
ing dramatic historic venues, with state of the art river-side locati
