SUMMARY:Consent - do you really need to ask? Association of Research Ethi
cs Committees (AREC) Regional Workshop at Durham University
DESCRIPTION:The AREC workshop will consider the concept of informed c
onsent, why it is valued by research ethics committees, how it might be ac
hieved with different participant populations, and whether it is always ne
cessary (or desirable). It is targeted at researchers from all disciplines
and aims to increase understanding of and stimulate discussion around thi
s fundamental ethical principle. The programme features academic speakers f
rom a range of UK institutions, including Durham, and attendance is open t
o all within (and beyond) the University. It is of particular interest to
staff and students conducting research involving human participants as wel
l as those responsible for ethical review. For the purposes of this worksh
op all members of Durham University (staff and students) will be eligible
for the AREC member rate of £50 for the day including lunch and refr
eshments. The registration form has now been released for this event.
