 d the origins of manga.An exhibition highlighting the range of Hokusai&rsq
 uo;s book illlustrations, together with examples of work produced by some 
 of his contemporaries, and includes some of earliest books to be referred 
 to as 'manga'.The print designer and painter Katsushika Hokusai is one of 
 Japan&rsquo;s most well-known artists, world famous for works such as the 
 Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji including the iconic image The Great Wave o
 ff Kanagawa. Less well known is Hokusai&rsquo;s prolific output of illustr
 ated books.In later life Hokusai used the signature Gaky&#333; r&#333;jin,
  &lsquo;the old man mad about drawing&rsquo;. During more than 70 years as
  an artist (he died in 1849 aged ninety), Hokusai illustrated or contribut
 ed to more than 270 books. Some in colour, others in black and white, thes
 e books included works of fiction, poetry, erotica and instruction manuals
  for painters.
