SUMMARY:London Mathematical Society 2012
DESCRIPTION:Grand Biological Challenges for Mathematicians 9 July - 17 Jul
y 2012, Mathematical Sciences The goal of this symposium, co-funded by the
London Mathematical Society and EPSRC, is to develop channels of communic
ation between biologists at the forefront of their field, and mathematicia
ns who are either already engaged in various modelling efforts or curious
to learn about the challenges faced by biologists at a time when powerful
technologies provide a plethora of data and images requiring urgent scient
ific interpretation. The symposium will cover a wide range of modelli
ng techniques, including computer science, statistics, as well as biophysi
cs, and we expect that the interactions with biologists will inspire the d
evelopment of new mathematical techniques. We anticipate that it will cont
ribute to bridging the culture gap between biologists and mathematicians/p
hysicists unfamiliar with the handling of complex systems, and will attemp
t to develop a better sense of which mathematical models are either over-s
implified to the point of being useless, or over-complex to the point of b
eing intractable. The conference will involve around 70 participant
s, roughly half of whom will come from the UK. A list of participants and
more details are available on the symposium website.
