Junior Cafe Scientifique Scheme

The Junior Café Scientifique Scheme is a national initiative, based on the international Café Scientifique programme, and supported by the Wellcome Trust. The scheme aims to promote student interaction, critical thinking and discussion of scientific ideas and concepts and their social and ethical implications, and provides scientists with the opportunity to introduce their subject to school students in a relatively informal setting.

Junior Cafes Scientifique are events where, in a relaxed atmosphere, students can discuss contemporary issues in science and technology with working scientists. The format is simple. Speakers have about 10-15 minutes to introduce the topic and their interest in it and then the cafe is open for questions and debate. Although the cafes are supported by school staff and staff from the Junior Café Scientifique Scheme, they are organised and run by the school students themselves.
