Biography

Andy Husband is the Director of Education for the Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) programme based at Queen’s Campus Stockton.  The MPharm is due to start in September 2013; Andy is responsible for the development of the programme and the growth of the Division of Pharmacy within the School of Medicine and Health.

Andy registered as a pharmacist in 1994 completing his pre-registration training in community pharmacy. After a few years spent as a locum he joined the hospital service at Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead. Andy worked through various clinical rotations in medicine, surgery and medicines information. He eventually took charge of the anticoagulant service, which dealt with all patients taking oral anticoagulants in the Gateshead area. During this time he regularly contributed to the training of pharmacists, junior doctors and undergraduate pharmacy students.

Andy left the hospital service and joined the teaching staff at the University of Sunderland School of Pharmacy in 2003. During his time at Sunderland Andy was responsible for the Overseas Pharmacists Assessment Programme (OSPAP) and eventually the MPharm. He was the first programme director to design and implement an MPharm programme in line with the General Pharmaceutical Council Standards for the initial education and training of pharmacists.

Andy is a member of the GPhC Accreditation Team and the Board of Assessors. He is MPharm external examiner at a number of schools and has acted as an external advisor to schools developing new curricula. He has research interests in curriculum integration and the development of work based learning for pharmacy students. He is also interested in rational medicines use and the role of the pharmacist therein.
