Biography

Helen Moore has a BSc (Hons) degree in Cell Biology from Durham University, an MSc Information Technology from Teesside University and a PhD titled "Advice on diet and body weight for the management of type 2 diabetes in adults from different socio-economic status groups" also from Teesside University. She is a member of the Association for the Study of Obesity.

Helen is an accomplished information scientist and is involved in research on obesity, measurement of food intake/physical activity, nutrition and physical activity within the UK school system and systematic reviewing.

Her current major research interests are the continued development of the SNAP™ (Synchronised Nutrition & Activity Program) computer tool for measuring energy balance related behaviours (dietary intake and physical activity levels) in children - visit www.snapproject.co.uk for more information; the TeesCAKE (Tees Consumption and Activity in Kids' Experience) project which aims to encourage healthy weight, healthy eating and healthy lives in school children; and two pan-European projects; ENERGY (EuropeaN Energy balance Research to prevent excessive weight Gain among Youth), and ToyBox (A multifactorial evidence based approach using behavioural models in understanding and promoting fun, healthy food, play and policy for the prevention of obesity in early childhood); and works on a NIHR funded project titled Tackling Inequalities in Obesity. She, along with other researchers from the ORB research group, have also been working closely with the Catering Department to nutritionally analyse some of the meals provided for students and staff across the university.

She joined Durham University in October 2008, after working at Teesside University for six years in a variety of roles including a period of time in knowledge transfer and various obesity-based research projects.

Helen also works part-time for John Snow College as their College Support and External Relations Officer where her responsibilities include alumni, culture, fundraising and the setting up of the Middle Common Room (MCR) for postgraduate students of John Snow College.
