Abstract

This chapter explores the potential strengths and weaknesses of peer education with young people. While there is particular reference to sexual health the majority of the chapter draws on evidence from a range of health topics, given the limited robust evidence base for peer education in sexual health specifically.

It first considers the policy context for sexual health peer education before examining the broader history and definitions of peer education, drawing on other health-related topics before discussing the effectiveness, usefulness and potential challenges of the approach. This chapter does not provide a comprehensive account of the organization and implementation of peer education projects.
