Postgraduate Research
Welcome to the pages for current and potential postgraduate researchers in the School of Medicine and Health. The research degrees offered by the School are PhD, MPhil or MSc by research. We are also interested in attracting post-doctoral researchers to contribute to the vibrant research community at Durham University. If you are interested in pursuing postgraduate research within the School either as a degree or as a post-doc, then we invite you to browse the interests of our established faculty in the database below, to find alignment with your proposed field of study. Our research faculty have a wide variety of projects and are committed to finding and supporting engaged students.
The University provides training in a wide range of transferrable and subject-specific research skills. The School of Medicine and Health's postgraduate research students are also welcome expand their knowledge and skills by attending any of the School's Taught Postgraduate classes.
Applying to the School

Please begin by looking at the database of research interests and supervision expertise within the School.

If your interests appear to align well with the interests of a particular member of staff, then you should informally contact that staff member by email - a hyperlink to each staff member's email appears within the information relevant to them on the database.

If, after considering your proposed area of research informally, the staff member invites you to apply to the School, you should then - and only then - complete the School's pro-forma research enquiry form. Please do not submit this form until you are specifically invited to do so by a member of the School's research Faculty, or by the Director of Postgraduate Studies, Dr Sharyn Maxwell.

If you are successful at this stage, then the School will advise you on a formal application to the University.
