Durham Foundation Programme

The Durham Foundation Programme provides an access route into Phase 1 Medicine for mature students who lack the necessary entry level qualifications. The 1 year full-time programme provides a sound base in chemistry and biology coupled with writing and IT skills that are necessary to start the Phase 1 Medicine Programme. The Foundation Programme is aimed at non-traditional students who either have no formal qualifications or inappropriate professional qualifications and also degree level students who have a non-science degree. The Foundation Programme is not suitable as an entry route into Medicine for A-Level students who have recently failed to reach the required grades.

Students wishing to enter Phase 1 Medicine through the Foundation Programme are interviewed for Medicine prior to commenement of the Foundation year. Students who are successful at interview can then enter Foundation and upon completion of the Foundation year with the appropriate grades, then progress directly to Phase 1 Medicine. Students who are unsuccessful at interview for medicine can still enter the Foundation Programme with the aim of progressing to other Durham degree programmes such as Biomedical Sciences or Health and Human Sciences.
