Social Science Approaches to the Study of Mental Health.
A research project of the School of Applied Social Sciences.
Background
In 2005 a successful conference of the British Sociological Association Mental Health Study Group identified a need for the consolidation of the approach to the study of Mental Health by social scientists in the UK. An interdisciplinary group from Universities and Mental Health Institutes was formed to bid for funding to set up a seminar series of international calibre in order to achieve this objective.
Aims
To explore all contemporary aspects of mental health research in the social sciences, as well as suggesting future directions for research and capitalising on the existing knowledge base.
Methods
The Series will comprise four seminars, each at a different location across the UK:
- Seminar One - Innovative Approaches in Mental Health Research – Royal College of Psychiatrists, November 20th, 2006
- Seminar Two - Mental Health, Social Exclusion and Inequality, Manchester University, March 20th, 2007
- Seminar Three – Lifeworld and Emotional Well-being – Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, November 2007 (tbc)
- Seminar Four – Locating Mental Health Social Movement Organisations – University of Essex, March 2008 (tbc)
