Mark has a BA (hons), MA, and MSc, and is currently a Durham Doctoral Fellow in SASS. His PhD research is an evaluation of the impact School Sport Partnerships have in primary schools in the north east.

Adopting a critical realist method of evaluation, the in-depth analysis aims to identify the contexts and mechanisms in which SSPs operate effectively. Through allowing teaching staff in schools to voice their opinions of the programme's impacts, the evaluation aims to provide an alternative assessment of the programme to that produced in the hitherto largely quantitative evaluations.

Foucault's notion of governmentality is at the centre of the empirical research. This, it is hoped, will help explain the motivation behind the Labour government's unprecedented investment in the subject.
