We will be using JDK 5.0 which you can download for free from the Sun Java downloads page.
For an introduction to Java you could consider
Objects First with Java A Practical Introduction using BlueJ
David J. Barnes and Michael Kolling June (4th edition).
There is an associated web site where you can download evaluation versions of chapter 1 and chapter 2. For chapters 3 and onwards you will have to get hold of the book by borrowing or buying it. The lectures for the OOP course are be based around this book, using chapters 1,2,3,4,5,8,9 and 12.
Online text books: these may also be of some use and are free!
