Ruth First Scholar (2006-07) Nolukanyo Galela is from East London, in the Eastern Cape province of the Republic of South Africa. She graduated from the University of Fort Hare in 1985 with a Bachelor's degree in Education. She works for Walter Sisulu University of Technology & Sciences as a Supplemental Instruction Supervisor.

Kanyo came to durham in September 2006 to take an MA in Education. She was a member of St Chad's College, which is supporting the Ruth First Scholarship by providing subsidized accommodation.

Unfortunately, a dispute with her employers resulted in Kanyo having to return prematurely to South Africa, which meant that she was unable to complete her MA.
