RAE 2001
Durham is one of the UK's leading research institutions. Every five years the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) assesses the quality of research in all UK universities. It publishes its results in tables which compare subject groupings across universities on a scale of 1-5 star, where 1 is a concentration of research below national standards and 5 star a concentration of research of international quality. In the most recent Research Assessment Exercise (2001) Durham scored six 5 star, thirteen 5, twelve 4, and one 3a.
