Abstract

This volume comprises an edited collection of essays originally presented as papers at the EMTAR (European Meeting of teachers of Arabic Literature, now EURAMAL, European Association for Modern Arabic
Literature) conference held in Kraków in 2003. The volume begins with a general essay on intertextuality in modern Arabic literature by Roger Allen, and brings together essays in Edwar al-Karrat, Sa d All h Wann s, Naj b Mahf z, Rab J bir, Sal m Matar and al-Tayyib S lih, among others.
Among other topics discussed are transformations of the Alf Layla wa layla in modern Arabic literature. The volume, which also includes two essays on aspects of intertextuality in Gulf literature, is edited by Luc-Willy Deheuvels (INALCO, Paris, France), Professor Barbara Michalak-Pikulska (Jagiellonian University, Kraków, Poland), and Professor Paul Starkey (Arabic Department, School of Modern Languages and Cultures, Durham University, UK).
