Optimal perturbations in subsonic flow
Optimal perturbations in the form of initial perturbations, boundary perturbations and external forcing are studied in incompressible/compressible flows.Firstly examples of well-known optimal initial perturbations or most unstable modes are introduced in the context of several fundamental flows. Secondly, the boundary perturbation and its interaction with other types of perturbations are presented. Vortex flow, stenotic channel flow and flow past a backward-facing step are used to illustrate the methods. Thirdly, the boundary perturbation is exploited to optimally control unsteadiness of the base flow and the suppression of vortex shedding in flow past a cylinder is used as a case study. Finally, external forcing inside the nozzle of a compressible jet flow is briefly discussed.
