NERC Science Day
Earth & Environmental Science Research in NE England: Current Highlights & Future Plans
July 14th 2010, 9am until 5pm
Calman Centre, Science Site, Durham University
A showcase for NERC-funded research in Northeast England, involving a day long engagement between scientists working in Durham, Newcastle and Northumbria universities, together with invited representatives from NERC and industry. We are looking forward both to demonstrating the quality of NERC science being carried out and its impact both nationally and internationally. There is also an opportunity to engage in a new forward planning process for research.

Building capacity in the NE
The afternoon session was arranged into 4 parallel thematic discussion groups:
- - Sustainable Resources, including Energy (notes from meeting)
- - Living with Environmental Change (summary & presentation)
- - Natural Hazards (summary)
- - Blue Skies and Regionally Focussed Research (summary)
These groups were charged with exploring potential contributions by Northeast universities in the named thematic, exploring possible collaborations and identifying areas where existing NERC programmes may not be suitable for addressing outstanding problems. This will include building capacity within the North-East for cross-University initiatives. Representatives from both Durham and Newcastle led these discussions and produced short written summaries which are linked to the four theme titles above.
This was then followed by a second session where we specifically looked at opportunities for growing Knowledge Exchange. A summary and associated presentation are also available.
