I am Professor in the Department of Physics.
My Teaching includes:
•Lecturing the L3 cosmology course.
•Until recently I was leader of the L3 Computing Laboratory and Chair of the staff-student consultative committee.
•I also organise the astronomical computing for the Level 4 astronomy projects. Some quick guidelines can be found here.
My previous lecturing courses have included and a fun Level 1 course, The Physics of Motorsport.
Research
Teaching
My research time is shared between observational and theoretical cosmology. In particular, I work on the formation and evolution of galaxies and clusters of galaxies. I am a member of the Institute for Computational Cosmology
I am fascinated by the existence of galaxies and the ways in which they formed. Why is the night sky so full of stars? What has made the different types of galaxies so different from each other? Interested? me too.
Current Research Topics include:
•The ROLES survey of low-mass galaxies at z=1.
•Detailed studies of high redshifts galaxies - harnessing the power gravitational lensing.
•Models of Galaxy Formation: both semi-analytic and numerical. My current focus is the EAGLE project, a life-like universe within the DiRAC supercomputer.
•Galaxy clusters and the intra-cluster medium.
