Welcome to Queen's - A Cosmopolitan Campus
Life at Queen's offers a cosmopolitan mix between the the old and new - modern buildings with the latest research facilities, while retaining the traditions of one of England's oldest and best universities.
Elizabeth, Applied Psychology
Established in 1992, Queen's Campus is a place where things happen. It has grown steadily to become an integral part of Durham University, a modern campus located in a prestigious waterfront setting in Stockton-on-Tees. It is home to around 2,000 students and to two of Durham's distinctive Colleges (John Snow and Stephenson). Student social space continues to be developed. In addition to the recent investment in the Waterside Restaurant, a modern, sophisticated bistro and bar, a new £1m purpose built Junior Common Room will be opened in September 2010 at Stephenson College. At John Snow College, additional Junior Common Room Social Space will be provided as part of a £1m investment in the College.
A Forward-Looking Community
The next significant investment (approx £5.5m) at Queen's Campus will be in Sport Phase 2. This is a superb indoor sports hall and fitness suite that will become the home for the University's elite badminton, basketball, netball and volleyball teams. The facility will open in September 2010 and will provide a focus for sporting activity for everyone at Queen's Campus. We are developing a partnership with Arc, a community, arts and education centre, located in Stockton, to enrich and enlarge the provision of cultural and social facilities for students at the Campus. We are also planning a performance space funded from philanthropic sources that will further add to the facilities on offer at the Campus.
A Contemporary Subject Range
Our research-led undergraduate teaching provides a contemporary range of courses, distinctive from those on offer in Durham City. Our innovative Foundation Programme, attracts students from atypical educational backgrounds, without formal qualifications. Meanwhile our suite of new Masters courses in medicine, health and well-being is making a key contribution to up-skilling workforces in the Tees Valley.
A Future of Further Expansion
An ambitious development strategy for the Campus through to 2020 was approved in June 2008. This envisages significant growth in student and staff numbers at Queen's, new programmes of study at all levels, and corresponding developments in teaching and research space and social and sporting facilities.
Contributing to the Regeneration of the Tees Valley
Queen's is also poised to play a crucial leading role in the transformation of the North Shore of the Tees. Tees Valley Regeneration has initiated a £300 million development of the North Shore to help regenerate the centre of Stockton as a river-facing town. As part of this a £17 million ‘iconic' footbridge will be completed later this year, linking our campus to the North Shore.
Queen's is an exciting place in which to live and study so why not come along to the campus and see for yourself. There are open days and tours (organised each week). We look forward to meeting you.
