Psychology (C800) Admissions Procedure
The Department welcomes applications from students of all ages and backgrounds.
The Psychology (C800) course is however extremely popular and we receive far more applications from student who meet or exceed our typical entry requirements than we are able to make offers to. Your reference and personal statement are therefore very important to us and anything you can tell us which indicates your commitment to studying psychology will be taken into account. This could include information that you give about the duration and type of interest you have in psychology, an indication of relevant reading that you have done, or relevant practical experience. We are looking for applicants who have the merit and potential to excel as a psychology student at Durham University.
This decision about whether or not to make applicants offers can however sometimes be delayed. Whilst this is regrettable it is important that we ensure fair consideration is given to applicants applying throughout the UCAS cycle and as such we cannot make too many offers too soon in the year. If you have any queries regarding your application please feel free to contact us at any time.
Once a decision has been made this will be passed to UCAS as soon as possible and you will be notified online. Once this decision for an offer has been made your application will also be forwarded to your nominated college. You will recieve written confirmation from one of the colleges once you have been accepted.
Deferred Entry
You are welcome to apply for deferred entry but we only make a small number of offers. Hence, the level of competition for a place may be higher than if you applied to us for direct entry.
Mature Students
We welcome applicants from mature candidates. We will be pleased to consider your application if you do not possess standard qualifications, but are able to demonstrate sufficient motivation and ability to pursue work to degree standard. Students of high ability, but who have not been able to study for qualifications normally accepted by the University, may be eligible to enter the Foundation Centre - see http://www.dur.ac.uk/foundation.centre/
Entrance Requirements - Psychology (C800)
The Department accepts a wide range of entry qualifications including GCE and VCE A levels. For further details, including our typical offer, please refer to the Durham University undergraduate degree programme database at: www.durham.ac.uk/courses
We do not ask for any specific A levels but we do not include General Studies or Critical Thinking in our offers. The equivalent offers for other qualifications can be found here.
We also ask that applicants have at least Grade C in GCSE Maths (or its equivalent) in order to help you deal with the statistical element of the programme.
All of our degree programmes start psychology from scratch and do not assume prior specialist knowledge. We therefore assume that our applicants have not studied psychology, but we welcome application from those who have.
International Students
We welcome applicants from International Students. School-leaving qualifications from many countries are acceptable. Please contact international.office@durham.ac.uk for advice on whether your own qualifications are acceptable.
It is the normal expectation that candidates for admission should be able to demonstrate satisfactory English Language proficiency before the start of a programme of study. Candidates who are not native speakers of English should therefore either: within two years prior to admission have been taught and passed the University's entry requirements using the English Language or have recently passed an English Language proficiency test recognised by Durham University at the required level, for example the IELTS test (6.5, no element below 6.0). Please contact the international.office@durham.ac.uk if you need more information about which English Language qualifications are acceptable.
