Supporting the activities of a Rotary Community Corps

In 2006 the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid-City established a Rotary Community Corps to help lead community developments at Moraketiara. Every week for many months, Rotarians from Colombo travelled the many miles to support this Corps in the first year of its existence.

The Corps, under the guidance of Rotarians and with excellent local leadership, has gone from strength to strength. Revitalising local businesses and income generation are core goals. By way of support for these goals, Durham University has provided three fishing boats for the corps which can be loaned by members of the community.

Durham University students work alongside Corps members in their community develpment activities, as documented in the Moraketiara pages of the Student Involvement section of this website.

A second Rotary Community Corps (RCC) link was established in Ahangama in 2009. This initiative is also under the leadership of the Rotary Club of Colombo Mid-City. RCC members serve as local ‘grassroots' leaders for progressing activities leading to improvements in community social and economic life.

Durham University students are actively supporting such developments and empowerment processes as documented on the Ahangama pages of the website.
