Project Sri Lanka

Developing art, music, sport and cultural activities with Sri Lankan students

Enjoying art classes

The sharing and exchange of cultures lies at the heart of all Project Sri Lanka activities. For Durham University students, immersion in ‘the Sri Lankan way of life' is, for many, a genuinely life-changing experience and one which benefits all participants.

A hard won race
They share the culture and leisure pursuits of the western world - its music, art, drama, poetry, sports, games, and so on with Sri Lankan people of all ages. Whilst Sri Lankan five year olds may be singing British nursery rhymes and songs, Sri Lankan university students may be learning Shakespeare or popular song lyrics. For Durham students, Sri Lanka brings countless opportunities for engaging in the culture of the east - learning to play the drums of Kandy, to sing the songs of the island, to dance its traditional dances, to play its games and to wear its dress.

It is the tradition of the Project that the student groups stage a grand cultural show with the people of their local communities and university. Such shows attract wide audiences and are a splendid celebration of the sharing of cultures.
