28th July: Moreketiara
(28 July 2011)
Today was mine, Helen and Georgette's fourth day teaching in Moreketiara.
On our initial journey here we got lost on the way, ended up missing our stop, and going to Tangalle. Thankfully we are staying in the village with Primitha and her husband, and will not be repeating the journey! The bright-side to this is definitely the food, which has been wonderful at every meal, and the week has given us a true experience in a Sri Lankan home.
This morning we went to the village preschool. There were about 30 children there, and they had the dance teacher in for the morning. This meant the three of us got involved in 2 hours of Sri Lankan dancing, which in turn meant we spent 2 hours making fools of ourselves! The children loved the dancing and the music though, and some children were especially gifted in this area! We did try to sit down and watch for a bit, but that idea was quickly dismissed, and we were back up learning the routines with them.
At 11 we had a quick changeover from the preschool to the main school just up the road. Our after school class today was with Grades 8 and 9, and we mostly played games and engaged in conversation with them, talking about their school, their hobbies, and Sri Lanka. I also got taught some Sinhalese - the numbers one to ten, and a few other key words - by some of the girls. Helen and Georgette were outside mainly playing ball games, cricket, and practicing skipping.
The session went really well, and I'm looking forward to having the remaining year groups tomorrow!
