Stockton-on-Tees

The town of Stockton, just 10 minutes walk away from the Campus, offers all the familiar high street shops; two large indoor shopping malls - Castlegate and Wellington Square; and weekly markets including a monthly Famers' market where you can sample tasty local produce.

The town has lots of great individual restaurants, cafes and bars, as well as cultural attractions such as the Preston Hall Museum, Stockton's first public museum; the replica ship HM Bark Endeavour, on the banks of the river and the Cultural Quarter (where you'll find Tees Music Alliance). Our partnership arts venue, ARC, is based in Stockton, hosting a variety of movies and theatre productions. There is also the Georgian Theatre, offering local, upcoming and big-name live music in an 18th Century Georgian building, and the Forum Theatre in nearby Billingham.

Teesside Retail Park

At Teesside Retail Park, just down the road from Queen's Campus, you can find a huge variety of shops as well as loads of well-known restaurant chains including Frankie and Benny's, Chiquito, TGI Friday's and Pizza Express. In addition, there's a large, multiplex cinema and tenpin bowling.

Water Sports

Located on the River Tees, Queen's is a great place for all sorts of water sports, with a wonderful stretch of non-tidal river frontage. Our new boat house by the river provides facilities for students and staff, and whether you're into sailing, kayaking, canoeing or rowing, waterskiing, jet-skiing or rafting, you have easy access to a range of excellent facilities.

One of England's best white water courses is just up the river at the Tees Barrage, where you can enjoy kayaking, canoeing and white water rafting. Coaching is available for first timers and all instructors are highly qualified and experienced. The Tees Barrage White Water Course is currently undergoing a £4.6 million redevelopment to turn the site into a world-class facility.

The River Tees Water Sports Centre is right opposite the Campus offering diving, dragon boating, kayaking, personal watercraft (e.g. jet skis), rowing and waterpolo.

A few yards from Stockton's town centre, you'll find Castlegate Quay Watersports Centre. The centre is probably the North East's largest and best-equipped sailing and paddling centre and boasts non-tidal fresh water from the upper Tees areas.
