Open Society Foundation

We are delighted to announce that Durham will be working with the Open Society Foundation for a second year to offer two jointly funded scholarship schemes for international students from September 2013. Five Open Society Foundation-Durham University Masters Scholarships in the field of Hazard, Risk and Resilience will be available to applicants from Afghanistan, Nepal, Indonesia and Palestine. Two Open Society Foundation-Durham PhD Scholarships in Social Sciences and Humanities for Afghan Women will be available to Masters Graduates of Kabul University and students who have successfully completed their Masters at Durham as part of the Afghan Women's Scholarship Scheme. Both schemes aim to provide post-graduate opportunities in social sciences and humanities for students from countries which may have limited local capacity for high quality education.

The Open Society was founded by George Soros in 1993 and works to promote vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. Their Scholarship programmes assist committed individuals of diverse backgrounds wishing to develop the capacities and abilities that will enable them and others to advance open civil society values and to make contributions towards positive social change in their communities.
