Sport
Sport is a big part of Durham University with over 90% of our students taking part in sport on a regular basis.
Across our Durham City location and Queen's Campus location, sport focuses on three core strands:
Performance and leadership

Our philosophy at Durham is to provide opportunities in sport to allow exceptional people to do exceptional things. In this respect there can be few better shining examples than our Durham graduates, Will Carling, Nasser Hussain, Jonathan Edwards and Andrew Strauss.

If you want to continue to pursue sport at a high level, then there are few better places to do that than Durham University. We are consistently ranked within the top 8 out of all the Higher Education institutions in the British University Sport rankings and in 2010/11, finished in fourth position.

Across Durham City and at Queen's Campus, we have full-time coaches in Basketball, Cricket, Fencing, Hockey, Lacrosse, Netball, Tennis, Rowing and part-time coaches in a further 15 disciplines.
Few institutions more seamlessly, successfully and consistently combine sporting and academic excellence. For more information visit our Team Durham website.

Participation
90% of our students take part in sport on a regular basis in a programme that is both innovative and constantly changing.

Across the University there are opportunities for male and female students to compete in 15 sports, across over 380 different teams, on a weekly basis.

Because of our unique college system, it's really easy to get involved in sports within your college, whatever you sport you're into, whatever your level. You can join your top college team and compete in our Durham's College Sport programme - larger than any other intra-mural competition offered in Britain. Or you can just join a team to try something new and have fun!

Community and Sport Development
At Durham we believe that University sport has a pivotal role to play within the community. Not only do our students have the chance to take part in participation and leadership in sport, but we also provide access to a wide range of broader developmental opportunities, all of which provide valuable real life experience in a setting where students can make a genuine difference. These include Career Development Scholarships, coaching and officiating. The University Sport programme gives opportunity for students to volunteer with coaching children from local schools and take part in outreach work through sport.

Bursaries and scholarships
The University awards approximately 12 sporting scholarships per year which entitle the chosen athletes to £2,000 on an annual basis throughout their undergraduate career.
