Media
Durham's student station Purple Radio is a 24 hour internet based service, courting more listeners than ever before. The station has a record number of DJs and shows and listener numbers are steadily on the increase. The station provides opportunities to get involved with all aspects of radio production, from DJing and producing to more technical sound engineering roles.
If your interest lies in the media then Durham offers a multitude of opportunities across all manner of communications. Budding journalists and writers can try their hands at reporting for the DSU newspaper, Palatinate. Published every fortnight, this ever-popular student title also has an online TV channel, offering the chance to gain valauble broadcasting experience.
Durham alumni who have gone on to careers in journalism include George Alagiah and Jeremy Vine (both former Palatinate editors), sports presenters Mark Pougatch and Gabby Logan and Radio 5 Live presenter Shelagh Fogarty.
Student news and magazine websites, 'durham21', and recently launched 'The Bubble' both welcome new writers and contribuors across a wide range of subjects from politics to TV. Many of our Colleges write, edit and produce their own magazines, such as 'Simply Red' at Queen's-based Stephenson College or 'Wood Words' at Durham-based Collingwood College.
I remember Durham with huge fondness and gratitude. Even while I was there I think I understood what a privilege it was to spend three energetic years in such a beautiful place.
