Scholarly Community
Trevelyan College has put the development of research-led academic ambition and aspiration at the heart of our development vision over the coming ten-year period and we have doubled the size of our postgraduate community in the last three years; new purpose-built, residential postgraduate accommodation and social facilities for a hundred postgraduates is currently being planned.
All postgraduates are members of our Middle Common Room (MCR) - a formal postgraduate association. The MCR has a dedicated social programme including formal dining as well as its independently organised academic and non-academic events, and full participation in the College's successful sporting campaigns. The College is affiliated to active, cross-disciplinary research groupings including the Durham Energy Institute and the Centre for Medical Humanities. We see postgraduates as leading the College's ambitious academic development and in the building of a community ethos that respects and promotes the generation of new knowledge and scholarly understanding.
Additional college costs
- MCR fee: £25.00

Postgraduates at Trevelyan participate in a range of college societies and clubs. The MCR executive committee is the only postgrad-only society or committee in the College. Some examples are as follows:

Other Societies: Film Society TAMPACS (for world cinema) / Hex (College Magazine) / RASTA (Art) / Photography Society / Wine Society / Chess Society
Sports: Badminton; Men's and Women's / Tennis / Squash; Men's and Women's / Netball / Lacrosse (Mixed) / Rugby; Men's and Women's / Martial Arts / Hockey; Men's and Women's / Ultimate Frisbee / Cheerleading / Rowing / Skiing (usually one trip at Easter) / Football; Men's and Women's / Basketball; Men's and Women's / Table Tennis / Cricket / Pool; Men's and Women's / Darts / Indoor Climbing / Croquet (on the less-than-flat back lawn)
In Durham, there are two levels of sport competition: College and University. In general the University Sports Clubs are very serious about the sport and compete against other universities all over the country, whereas the college teams will only compete against each other, require less commitment, and are a great way to meet new people and try new sports in an informal, relaxed environment.
Support
There is a comprehensive network of pastoral support including the Principal, Professor H M Evans, the Senior Tutor, Dr I J Latham, the Bursar, Mr M Clemmett and the Chaplain, Revd Dr P J Regan who can advise on any personal or financial issues and provide guidance on University Regulations and procedures. All postgraduates can also opt in to be allocated a College Mentor.
