St Chad's College is located on a lovely, historic street just a minute or so from the centre of the historic city of Durham. To the front of the College is Durham Cathedral and to the back are lawns and the River Wear. While the College is made up of the equivalent of fourteen historic listed buildings, the interiors have been modernised again and again over the centuries.
Unlike most other Durham colleges, St Chad's has its own college-based academic and research staff. This gives our College a unique character, which ought especially to appeal to postgraduates. Our College Fellows have academic interests in Economics, Sociology, Law, English Literature, Geophysics, Theology, Ethics, Social Regeneration, Education, Spirituality, Film, Music, Fine Art, Creative Writing, Development and Public Policy; but postgraduates from other disciplines are more than welcome to apply.
Fellows, staff and students of all ages dine together and mix freely every day and because of our modest size, postgraduates have ample opportunity to get to know their fellow postgraduates, the research staff, and College Officers. The Postgraduate Director has responsibility for convening academic events that draw postgraduates and others together. Postgraduate seminars or forums take place throughout the year and they give postgraduate students an opportunity to discuss their own research and to hear active researchers describe their work - and indeed their own experience of having been postgraduates. The Senior Common Room (SCR) has lectures and 'conversations' given by senior members of the College or their guests: postgraduates are always invited to these and other SCR events.

Societies, sports and outreach
All clubs, societies and sports teams are open to postgraduates. Postgraduates can also be involved in, for example, running the College bar and organising College social events. Postgraduates are represented on all College committees.
Support
- Our Senior Tutor has overall responsibility for student welfare and the tutorial system for both undergraduates and postgraduates. In relation to postgraduates, this is largely delegated to the Postgraduate Director.
- Our Postgraduate Director liaises between the College and the MCR. He is the first point of contact with the College on postgraduate matters and is part of the College welfare team.
- College Tutors: All postgraduates are assigned a personal tutor with whom they can discuss personal and pastoral matters. These are not academic tutors and academic support (other than the most general) should be sought from staff in academic departments.
- MCR Welfare Representative, who is a postgraduate student and a member of the MCR executive committee.
- Chaplain: Available to consult on all pastoral, spiritual and welfare matters.
- Chaplaincy Team: Members of staff also available to consult on pastoral, spiritual and welfare matters.
