The College of St Hild & St Bede is the largest mixed community College in the University. Our College community is very diverse and includes students from 27 different nationalities. This year 70 postgraduate students have chosen to live in College and this group forms the hub of a vibrant community.
The College occupies a 16-acre site to the north of Durham which benefits from being less than 5 minutes' walk from the City Centre. We are surrounded by our own parkland and have our own sports facilities. There is one student body within the College, called the Student Representative Council (SRC). However, within this body is a postgraduate committee which has recently established the Postgraduate Society; and together these look after the interests of the postgraduates in college. Postgraduate students dine together as a group every Wednesday in the 50-seat dining room and the Postgraduate Committee/Society organises regular social events, including inter-college formal dinners, weekly social evenings, seminar evenings, film nights, and trips out of Durham into the surrounding area.
Postgraduate students in their second and third years are invited to join the Senior Common Room (SCR) and can become either resident or non-resident tutors to our undergraduate students. The College is also able to offer scholarships to postgraduate students for their studies including the Collier Scholarship for part-time students in the School of Education; the Hild Bede Scholarship, (in memory of Rebecca Allinson Kirby) for Masters students in the Department of Divinity and Theology; and a Scholarship to support Masters students in the Institute of Medieval and Renaissance Studies. The College also provides bursaries for travel in support of a dissertation or thesis.
