Do I have to choose a college?
Full-time Postgraduates
All students are members of one of our colleges. College allocation is made after you have received and accepted an offer from the University. Once you have received an offer from the University, our Colleges Postgraduate Office will contact you to provide you with further information about college membership and accommodation options.
Once you have accepted your University offer, you can express a preference for membership of a particular college if you would like to, but this is not compulsory. If you express a college preference and your first choice college cannot give you membership, your application will be passed to an alternative college which has vacancies to be filled. If you prefer not to select a college, we will select a college for you on your behalf.
At this stage you can also apply for college accommodation if you would like to If you wish to apply for accommodation, please ensure the college you choose provides the kind of accommodation you would like to apply for.
Part-Time and Distance-Learning Postgraduates
Part-time and Distance Learning students are allocated to a college depending on their programme of study. College accommodation is not available, but full membership is provided as standard. Some colleges may be able to provide short term, temporary accommodation for part-time or distance learning students who are members. You should contact your college directly to enquire. For information about private accommodation, please see www.durhamstudentpad.co.uk
What do I look for in a college? |
|
Our colleges share a lot of similarities, each offering excellent facilities, opportunities for personal development and a comprehensive support system. However, every college has its own distinctive character, defined by its buildings, traditions, location, size and people. We have fourteen colleges in Durham City, one of which (Ustinov) is exclusively for postgraduate students and two colleges in Stockton-on-Tees at Queen's Campus, all within walking distance of lectures, study facilities, bars, cafes and shops. For most students, college preference is influenced by the type of accommodation, the size and the traditions of the college, whether you intend to live in college or in town, and whether you prefer to mix with undergraduate students or not. Please note: If your course is based in Durham City, you will be a member of a Durham-based college. If your course is based in Stockton, you will be a member of a Stockton-based college. All the colleges have a unique flavour and provide very different experiences, so take some time to explore the individual college summary pages and websites. You are also welcome to contact individual colleges for information about their facilities and accommodation. Whichever college you join, all provide a perfect environment for making the most of your time as a student at Durham University. |
