Accommodation Guarantee Scheme for single students
The following information applies to full-time postgraduate students in Durham City.
Durham University has a number of rooms available to Postgraduate Students. Subject to room availability, Durham offers a guaranteed offer of single accommodation in a college or college managed accommodation to applicants whose course starts in September/October 2013.
To qualify for the accommodation guarantee you need to:
- accept your offer to study at Durham
- apply for accommodation using the online accommodation application form by 1st July 2013
- pay the £250 accommodation booking fee by 1st July 2013
- sign and return your accommodation licence agreement within the time period specified in your accommodation offer.
Please note that we will allocate rooms on a first come, first served basis and the above guarantee is strictly subject to room availability. Durham University will publish updates of the number of rooms remaining throughout the application cycle.
If the number of rooms remaining reaches zero before the 1st July deadline then the accommodation guarantee will be suspended. This does not mean anyone applying after this time will not get College accommodation, rather that it will not be guaranteed.
Applicants who have accepted an offer to start a Durham postgraduate programme in September/October 2013 can complete the accommodation application form from March 2013.
Please note, accommodation at Queen’s Campus will be provided in purpose-built student residences close to both John Snow and Stephenson Colleges and the centre of Stockton. These are operated on the University’s behalf by a private property management company. Students based at Queen’s Campus who qualify for the accommodation guarantee will be offered accommodation at this college supported site.
To maximise your chances of obtaining a room in your preferred college we strongly advise that you apply and pay your booking fee as early as possible. You can apply for accommodation if you accept a conditional offer or an unconditional offer. You don’t need to wait until you fulfil the conditions of your offer to apply for accommodation – if you subsequently fail to meet the conditions of your offer, your booking fee will be refunded if you notify the Colleges Postgraduate Office immediately.
Please note, you may be offered accommodation in another college if the college that accepts you originally becomes fully allocated. If you are offered and accept accommodation in another college, your college membership will also be transferred.
Applications received after 1st July 2013
Applicants who apply after 1st July can apply for accommodation by joining the waiting list for college accommodation. There is no guarantee that accommodation will be available but in previous years we have been able to offer a limited number of single rooms to applicants on this list. Further information and the waiting list application form will be available in July 2013.
Family Accommodation
There is limited university accommodation available for students bringing their partners or families to Durham.
Keenan House at Dryburn Court, about 1 mile north-east of the city centre, contains 70 one, two and three bedroom flats, and some colleges may also be able to offer double rooms for couples.
We regret that we are unable to offer a guarantee of accommodation to family applicants as demand always exceeds availability. Early applications are strongly advised.
