Durham has been ranked among the four top UK Physics and Astronomy Departments in The Times league table for a number of years.
The Complete University Guide ranks Durham's Physics Department in fourth place nationally for entry standards (i.e., the average UCAS tariff score of new students under the age of 21). Only Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial have higher scores.
Physics is fundamental. It is central to our understanding of the nature of matter and the composition and origin of the Universe. It underpins the technological advances of modern society. Studying Physics enables you to learn about the big bang, black holes, the Higgs boson, high temperature superconductors, quantum mechanics, relativity, superstrings and the search for a unifying field theory. A well chosen physics degree programme will also help you to develop the positive qualities sought by employers the world over and will give you the opportunity to lead scientific technological developments.
