Dr Sam Nolan

Biography
After growing up in the rural North West of England, Sam went to study for his MSCi in Physics at Imperial College, University of London. During his studies here, Sam got interested in astrophysics, which led him to study for a Ph.D. in Gamma-Ray Astronomy at Durham. After graduating, Sam worked through NASA funding for 12 months, based at Purdue University, USA. After this time, Sam returned to Durham where he has been based since. Although Sam's research interests are in high energy astrophysics, his rural background led him to develop interests in outreach activities. As such Sam is employed at Durham University's Foundation Centre, which is the University's flagship enterprise for widening access into higher education, as well as working for the Cherenkov Telescope Array project as an outreach associate, based at the University's Department of Physics. He is an active researcher in high energy gamma-ray astronomy, and is recognised as an expert in the atmospheric calibration of ground-based Cherenkov telescopes.
