Biography

  I) Responsibilities within University

Member of Durham  University Senate and Academic Electoral Assembly Standing committee, Vice-President of Durham UCU, Tutor at St. Aidan's College and St. Chad's College.

  II) Responsibilities within department

Chair of Departmental Health and Safety Committee

Secretary to the Centre for Materials Physics

  III) Teaching activity

Level One Lab Leader, Supervisor for 3 PhD research Projects. Lecturer of Level One electromagnetism course.  (approx 300 students) Level Four MSci Project supervisor, Level One Physics tutor.

Research Interests

  I) High dipole organic chromophores and polymers for nonlinear optics and telecomms applications.

Electro-optic effects in organic materials can be larger and show faster responses than those of inorganic materials. Our work targets new molecules and polymers that should bring high bandwidth and low drive voltage modulators and switches into wide deployment in the metro, as well as long haul, telecoms network.

II) Electrical and Physical properties of metal polymer composite systems

In conjunction with Peratech Limited. Including preparation of metal nanoparticles, with particular reference to controlling the morphology of the nanoparticles. The synthesis of inorganic nanoparticles for PV applications.

III) Magnetic properties of organic electron acceptor - metallic  materials

IV) Environmentally sensitive luminescence of organic fluorophores.

  V) The use of organic acceptor chromophores in OLEDS and organic PV systems
