The Grubb Parsons Lecture series
This public lecture series is a tribute to the life and work of Professor Sir Gareth Roberts FRS FREng (1940–2007) who joined the University of Durham as Professor of Applied Physics in 1976

Rochester
-
The Rochester Lectures
The lecture is named after the distinguished physicist George Dixon Rochester FRS, who was Head of Physics at Durham from 1955 to 1973. Rochester, together with C.C. Butler, had discovered the 'V-Particles' in cosmic rays in 1947 at Manchester and on coming to Durham he broadened his research interests to embrace Elementary Particle Physics - both experimental and theoretical - and, eventually, Astrophysics. The pre eminence of Durham physics nowadays owes much to Rochester's enthusiasum and skill. The Rochester Lecture is a continuing tribute to this impressive and kindly man.

Temple Chevallier

The Temple Chevalier Lectures
The Temple Chevallier lecture series honours the achievements of a remarkable man. Temple Chevallier (1794–1873) was Durham's first (and only) Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy, he also held the posts of Reader in Hebrew and Registrar. He founded the University Observatory from which he made important observations of sunspots and of Jupiter's satellites. He was also a much loved local Parish Priest at Esh, where he founded the village school and restored the church. A crater on the Moon is named after him. The lecture series reflects Temple Chevallier's interests encompassing, in turn, topics in astronomy, engineering, mathematics and theology. The lecture series is jointly supported by St Chad's College and the Departments of Physics and Engineering.

The Stirling Lectures
This year, the IPPP has instituted a new lecture series in honour of its Founding Director, Professor James Stirling FRS. We hope that this will become an annual fixture in the University calendar. The Stirling Lecture for 2008 is to be given jointly by Professor Brian Foster FRS, of Oxford University and the violinist Jack Liebeck. The lecture is entitled "Superstrings ... a celebration of Einstein and physics, with music by J.S. Bach, W.A. Mozart and F. Kreisler".
